Extemporé is designed for students in the 2nd through 12th grades. It consists of a teaching unit and a creative problem solving competition. The teaching unit may be used for one week or several and includes a variety of projects and activities to develop creativity and higher-level thinking skills.
The competition includes one of four thematic competition Arena Challenges - Showtime, Engineering Feats, Fine Tuning or Perspective, plus the AHA!
Extemporé Competition also includes:
Scholar - four rounds of forty questions each based on the current year's theme.
Competition among schools in a scholar bowl format will be offered four times during the day. Each school may send one Extemporé participant representative per membership per meet. All questions will pertain to information gleaned from our unit - Shake, Rattle & Roll. Schools will accumulate points throughout the day and awards will be given to the three schools with the most cumulative points.
Thinkers' Hall - three strategy games.
Three strategy games will be offered Extemporé participants throughout the day. The three games are Chess, Checkers and Mancala. Students may participate in one or all of these games. Awards will be given to the three highest scoring students in each game and division.
Sync Me A Song - lip sync competition
Each participating school may bring one lip sync performance (made up of Extemporé participants) per membership. The students may choose to wear costumes &/or bring props. All music used must have a relationship with our theme this year – Shake, Rattle & Roll. The performances will be judged and awards given to the top two performance groups.
Living Game - students play the part of game pieces
Our Extemporé competitive game of choice at State Extemporé 2018 will be announced at a later date.
